Where to Stay for The Boston Marathon

It’s already spring here in Massachusetts, which means it’s almost time for the Boston Marathon. Whether you’re a competitor or simply one of the one million spectators who arrive each year to cheer on the athletes, The Liberty is the perfect place to spend race weekend!

More Than a Century of Boston Marathon Champions

One of six World Marathon Majors and the oldest race of its type, the Boston Marathon has been held annually since 1897. The inaugural race saw John J. McDermott of New York come in first in an all-male field of only 15 runners. American Bobbi Gibb was the first women’s champion in 1966, though the women’s open wasn’t officially sanctioned until 1974, when Nina Kuscsik, also American, won.

In last year’s marathon, Kenyan runners Geoffrey Kirui and Edna Kiplagat triumphed on the men’s and women’s sides, respectively. For the third year in a row, Switzerland’s Marcel Hug brought home a win in the men’s wheelchair division, while Manuela Schär, also Swiss, emerged victorious in the women’s event, breaking an impressive four-year reign by American Tatyana McFadden.

The 2018 Boston Marathon

This year, the race kicks off on April 16 just west of Boston in the town of Hopkinton, and then winds its way into the city. People looking to cheer on the runners can watch from any number of spots along the route, including Heartbreak Hill, one of the race’s most infamous challenges, and Boylston Street, the home stretch of the entire race. Marathoners cross the finish line at historic Copley Square, less than two miles from our hotel.
