by Sadie Burchard

This August, The Liberty Hotel invites you to experience an unforgettable evening of magic, mystery, and jaw-dropping illusion. In partnership with Improv Asylum, we’re proud to present Boston’s Theater of Magic, starring internationally acclaimed magician Christopher Wayne. This is a dazzling new residency, hosted within the enchanted and historic walls of our Beacon Hill landmark.

Where Luxury Meets Illusion

Set in what was once the Charles Street Jail, The Liberty Hotel already has a flair, but on Saturday nights it becomes something even more extraordinary. Inside our walls, guests will now find a 90-minute show of magic, humor, and wonder crafted by one of the world’s most seasoned performers.

Meet the Magician

Christopher Wayne has headlined stages across Las Vegas, London’s West End, and Off-Broadway in New York, but now he is bringing his world-class magic (and cheeky wit) to Boston. Known for blending astonishing magic with a hilarious performance style, Wayne’s show is both family-friendly and unforgettable.

Whether you are a hotel guest or just looking for an unforgettable night out, Theater of Magic offers the perfect weekend thrill. With two performances every Saturday evening, there is plenty of opportunity to pick the showtime that suits your plans and pair the experience with dinner or drinks at one of our on-site venues.

Question & Answer with Magician Christopher Wayne

Performing in a historic jail turned luxury hotel, what’s your take on The Liberty as a venue?

Chris — “My job as a magician has taken me all over the world, literally staying in thousands of hotels over the years. The Liberty hits differently… you walk in the front entrance and you are taken into this time capsule of Boston’s history that is as elegant as it is mysterious. It’s astounding.”

Seeing as you are from Australia, what is it like performing in Boston compared to other cities you have toured? What is your favorite part about the city?

Chris — “When I say I love Boston, I loved it enough to move here. My first EVER American show was in Boston! It was 2016 at the Laugh Comedy Club. I’ve played about 130 American cities; Boston is the most unique combination of old and new. The people are my favorite thing.”

What got you into magic?

Chris — “I have a tattoo on my right arm of my Grandfather’s voice in the form of a sound wave. He showed me my first ever magic trick when I was about 8 — from that day I didn’t ‘want’ to be a magician, I simply knew I was going to be.”

What is one thing audience members don’t realize about what goes into a show like this?

Chris — “They don’t expect it to be about them. Magic is normally ‘come and watch the magician,’ but we are ‘come and experience magic.’ Very similar, but incredibly different.”

What do you want the audience to walk away feeling?

Chris — “Happier. I pray before every show, and the last part of my prayer is that my audience leaves better than they arrived. We don’t cure diseases, but magic lets me take people away from reality for 90 minutes, and into a realm where memories are made and the impossible is no longer.”

How do you make magic feel fresh every night even though you have done the same tricks before?

Chris — “It goes back to what I said about it being about the audience experience. Every show is about the audience, and every audience is different. We have so much interaction with our audience that it is impossible for two shows

to be the same. (I say that after 4,000 performances.)”

Your show blends comedy and magic, what comes first — the laugh or the illusion?

Chris — “For me, it’s the charisma of being a ‘magician.’ Anyone can learn a trick, literally anyone. But if you can make an audience laugh, you can get away with murder (which is handy in a former jail).”

If you could make one item at The Liberty Bar magically refill forever, what would it be?

Chris — “Laphroaig 10. One of the best scotches on earth. And you guys serve it!”

If you could teach one magic trick to everyone on earth what would it be?

Chris — “I’d teach them how to do an Aussie accent in America. It’s a superpower of its own….”
